Here are 3 tips for Instagram Stories for Business to help you connect with new and current customers.
Hopefully if you’re looking for tips for Instagram Stories it means that you’ve already got a social media strategy and are busy collating a content plan to ensure your campaign doesn’t run out of steam after week 2. (If you don’t, get in touch about my strategy workshops.)
One of the beautiful things about Instagram Stories is that they have so many free and easy to use features built in including captions, polls and graphics so you don’t need to have lots of design skills to produce captivating content.
Tip 1 – Hidden Hashtags
Within an Instagram Story there isn’t a lot of space and often adding hashtags can make your Story look overcrowded or messy. Try typing your hashtag and then pinching them to make them shrink. Now choose a graphic / poll / location and place it over the top of the hashtags to hide them. Voila! They still work but be careful, if they’re too small Instagram won’t register them and they lose their hashtag magic.
Tip 2 – Upload Brand Colours
This is an easy hack that allows you to present all your Instagram Stories using your exact brand colours.
- Open up Instagram Stories and click on Create
- Click on the Aa symbol
- Click on the three dots top right and choose Draw
- A row of colours appears along the bottom of your screen
- Press down on one of the colours and hold
- Drag your finger across the screen to select the colours of your brand
Alternatively add all your brand colours to one image (example below made with Canva) and save that image to your phone.

Then open up Instagram Stories, go back to your Photos on your phone and select the brand colours image. Copy it and place it within the Story.

In Stories click to write or draw and then on the dropper symbol next to the row of colours, hover over your photo and the brand colours will appear. Voila!
Tip 3 – Use Highlights Creatively
Brands like ASOS and Cole & Son (wallpaper heaven) offer great examples of how to use Instagram Highlights to drive customers attention to specific products or services. Follow their lead and use the Highlights feature with a simple graphic and description to make it easy for customers to find exactly what they want from your business quickly. Whilst your there, take a look at your bio, does it need a refresh? Write it from a customer perspective, what are you offering, do you need a call to action?
